COWBOY LONG RANGE
by Charles Goodnight a.k.a. Glenn Urbarnek
Cowboy Long Range is a match unique to Gunsmoke.
It was set up to give those that wanted a little more shooting time the
opportunity to do that, without the need for any extra equipment.
You shoot this match with the same guns and ammunition you use for the
Cowboy Action Match, except there is no shotgun.
The only difference is that the targets are, as the match is named, at a
little longer ranges. The match is
shot from the Guard Tower on top of Fort Finn.
The targets used are steel cutouts of a rabbit at 25 yards, an armadillo
at 50 yards, a coyote at 75 yards, a life size deer at 100 yards, and finally an
18 inch circular steel gong at about 120 yards.
The match consists of 20 rounds fired in the following
manner. Shooter
comes to the firing
position with two pistols, each loaded with five rounds, and a rifle loaded with
ten rounds. At the buzzer the
shooter draws the first pistol and fires five rounds at the rabbit.
Holsters, draws second pistol and fires five rounds at the armadillo.
Holsters, takes up rifle and fires five rounds at the coyote,
three
rounds at the deer, and the final two rounds at the circular gong.
The most hits win the match. It
is also timed so a winner can be determined in case there is a tie with number
of hits. All rounds are fired off
hand, no support. It is a fun match
and gives shooters the opportunity to test their shooting ability at a little
longer distance. Give it a try
sometime. All you need is a little
extra time, everything else you already have if you participated in the Cowboy
match.
