Texas Single Action
Shooting Society

1989 - In November or December of 1989, Mike and Mary Lou Harvey, Tommy Thompson, Nick Nixon, Ken Strode, Joe Bowman, and some

1990 – March 2 the first Lone Star Gazette was written by D. Thomas Thompson, Editor for Texas Single Action Shooting

March 4, 1990 Shoot – This Newsletter or Gazette is full of First
First official shoot of Texas Single Action Shooting Society

First name of the club went thru several changes before settling on the name we have today.  First shooting location - The range at Herman Brune’s place was beautiful.  Herman, Lisa, Sam, Whisper and Puppy were the perfect hosts.  We all agreed some rearranging was needed to get the site to work. Plans were made to make plans and to meet Saturday to start building some stages and to get things set up for more activities.

First photos taken - Loretta Nixon aka “Goober” was there to herd all of the shooters up in a pile for an inaugural photo of the first shoot.  It was reported in the April Lone Star Gazette that 23 Shooters and about a dozen spectators were among the bluebonnets and dandelions for this shoot.

First sponsor - Our first official sponsors were the folks at Collectors Firearms.

First announcement of The Business Meeting on April 1, 1990, 4 pm was held at the Holiday In on I-10 between Bunker Hill and Gessner to work on the By Laws.

Volume 1, No 2, April 1990 –

April 8, 1990 Shoot – Joe “Straight Shooter” Bowman provided his vast experience and showed us how to do some badly needed drills.  This was very helpful.

The match was carefully supervised by the range Master, Paul “Hip Shot” Wilson and range officers, Dave Higginbotham and John Fraley. Rule No. 1 is do it safely or don’t do it at all.  Many of our members have a lot of experience and are happy to share their knowledge.

The costumes were outstanding and will surely get even better each month.

Plans are under way.  Mc Bride sent several drawing on pepper popper targets, which we will construct as soon as time and finances permit.

The yearly dues were set at $35 bucket to become an official member.  Each month the shoot for member will be $7.50, none members will we $15.  Being a member will save you $10 each month that you can spend on ammunition or a new parasol.  Five dollars of each monthly fee goes to the Brune Ranch for the use of the property.  The extra moneys are badly needed to cover expenses and to continue the growth.

Construction committees with a chairman were set up.  They are as follows:

Construction – Jimmy Jacks
Range Master – Paul Wilson
Membership & Publicity (Newsletter) – D. Thomas Thompson
Stages – Dave Higginbotham
Chuck Wagon – Morey Williams

We how have two official sponsors who have generously donated seed money to the club.  They are:

Collectors’ Firearms
Fountain Firearms

Volume 1 No.3, May 1990

April 1 Business Meeting Report – Somewhere between 40 and 100 attended as Mrs. Marks, Boss Woman at LH7 had a family reunion earlier that same day.  Some stayed to see us in our dudes.  We conducted several major items of business including; vote on a name change for the club from Texas Single Action Shooting Society to Texas Shootist Society.  We found out this name was already taken so our Board of Directors had to make some other decision on names. More on this later.

We are stressed that members have to adopt an alias to shoot in stages.  We encourage everyone to do a little research and choose a name from active characters on the Texas frontier between 1850 and 1899.  The name must be one no one else has taken.

The Range Master and officers are doing work, on the Shooters Manual.

It was reported that several folks brought camera and took photos at LH7 among the wagons and log buildings.  Please bring them next shoot so we can see them.

The banking account and the purchase of automatic timers and targets were discussed.

  Names in the 3rd Gazette:

  D. Thomas Thompson - Editor
Mrs. Marks “Boss Woman”
Nick Nixon

Volume 1 ,No. 3, July 1990

In June our current Membership is 65 and growing since beginning in March.  We are moving up and keep a lot of people out of the bars several days every month.

The Business Meeting at LH7, the official announcement was made that the club is now and forevermore will be Texas Historical Shootist Society.  It’s difficult to say real fast but us Texans don’t talk real fast anyhow.  We will consider the word “Shootist” our tribute to the late and great John Wayne.

The heat was discussed and it was decided that special attention should be made at each of the hot summer shoots about taking special precautions about drinking plenty of water before and during the shoots to prevent heat strokes.

Discussion for official election of Club officers, application to the NRA club affiliation, and incorporation.  The discussion ended with the agreement to all. We agreed that more target were needed with an agreement made that these would be ordered.  Range safety was discussed.

It was reported that the Houston Chronicle would have a reporter visit to interview and take photos.  I t appeared in the Sunday June 10, 1990 Metropolitan section of the Houston Chronicle.  We got 50 phone calls from interested parties.

First Official Texas Historical Shootist Society Shooters Handbook was refined by a committee lead by Hip Shot Wilson with the help of Spud Boyle, Cal Smith, Pancho Villa Higginbotham and 2 Bears Hughes.  The Handbook was first delivered to all members at the June shoot.

Work Parties
Nick Nixon, Marty Ketchum, Michael Monti, Ken and Lee Redfearn, Brad Gray, Lou Smith, Gill McBride and Ed &Jeanne Rednick were some at two work parties in June building a jailhouse and a genuine Texas two holer.  The Texas heat did not slow them down much.

Volume1, No 5, August 1990

July Business Meeting - Decision for delaying the Big Annual Shoot till next year was made because of all the work done to get this club up and going.

Point was stressed that the schedule meetings and shoots, around holidays, gun shows, or Odie Vern’s birthday, would not be changed.  So mark your calendars.

Announcement was made that THSS is now NRA affiliated and our NRA Insurance hs been approved.

Work Party was well attended on the Saturday before the shoot.  The following brave souls attended.

Thomas “Billy Dixon” Thompson
Nick “Cap’n Jack Hays” Nixon
Pancho Higginbotham
Cap’n Latham Rudnick
Jeanne Rudnick
Black Jack Ketchum
G9 Gray
J. H.  Rodgers Smith

Tom O’Neil
M.C. Ragsdale Walters

We worked hard setting up up the stages including the Texas 2 Holer, Jail House, 32 new steel targets and about 100 bowling pins. A long-legged horse and 2 gun racks were also built and set up.  These workers were fed well and got to shoot free the following day.  Great rewards for jobs well done!

Who is that masked rider?   Ron “Durango Kid” showed up cutting a fine on ol’ Duke with his bandana covering the funniest part of his face.

Encouragement was made that all should join SASS.

If you don’t belong to SASS you should join just to get their quarterly newsletter, The Cowboy Chronicle edited by Tex Ormand.  This will help you keep up with the CAS activities all over the US.

Scrapbook: Diamond Lil has volunteered to start a scrapbook for the THSS so everyone with pictures of past shoots, please bring copies to the LH7  Sunday.

Volume 1 No. 6, September 1990

  D. Thomas Thompson opened this Gazette with this statement:

Prepare for the Worst

Yes, Cowboys, There’s a sinister plot developing and the results may be inevitable unless we act swiftly and surely.

I am talking about the veritable flood of females polluting our redneck shooting society.  They should be home cooking and cleaning our clothes.  There must a been 20 of them sashaying around at the August shoot and worse than that one of them actually shot in every dang stage and did not have the common curtsey to place last in any of them………    There was more to this article and it was quite humorous but I (Linda Hass) didn’t want to start an uprising of the ladies over statements made in jest so many years back.  Yes we ladies are a big part of THSS and we are here to stay.  Ha Ha.

Scrapbook –  Diamond Lil - We gathered a few more photograph of earlier shoot for the scrapbook. The progress made by THSS since our inception in March is amazing and it shows in the pictures.

Awards for the July Shoot

Genuine hand lettered tin cups were presented to each of the five deserving shooter.

Best Overall Score – Kid Redfearn
Second Overall Score – Cap’n Jack Nixon
Third Overall score – Cactus Jack Redfearn

The overall scores awards were based on the lowest total scores among the 38 shooters so they involved some pretty fancy shooting.

Hard worker award – Jeanne Rudnick (Timeless efforts in checking us in at the shoot, organizing teams and anything else that needed doing.

Most potential for improvement – Dan Boyd

Club Spirit – Ron “Durango Kid” Blascke

Most important and best-deserved award!  Ron was having a great time with his bandana over his face and always yelling encouragement to other shooters.  Thanks to Ron for his attitude.
